There is nothing better for reacquainting yourself with the pleasures of having time for yourself than a holiday immersed in nature. The harmony of the numerous valleys in the province of Varese offers the possibility of experiencing green tourism in Lombardy with no hurry and total freedom to explore unspoilt panoramas, vibrant colours and intense fragrances.
North of the province of Varese, on the borders with Switzerland, the Valli del Luinese are oases of tranquillity: for example the village of Monteviasco, which clings to the mountainside and is reachable only by cable car. Valceresio, where the province of Varese meets the Lago di Lugano, is where the Viggiù quarries are located; quarries from which, for centuries, stone used in the construction of gothic cathedrals was extracted and which today are still places of interest and beauty.
Valcuvia and Valtravaglia are open valleys, where the views of a gentle panorama disappear towards the horizon: in these places the writer Piero Chiara set several of his novels. Between Valcuvia and the city of Varese, lies Val di Rasa, a narrow valley flanked by the imposing peaks of the Campi dei Fiori mountains that give there name to the regional park, it is the perfect starting point for natural history excursions in Lombardy.
Valganna and Valmarchirolo connect Lago di Lugano to the city of Varese, also known as “Città Giardino” or “Garden City” for the splendour of its gardens. Prized destination for nature excursions in Lombardy, thanks to the presence of thick forests that promise cool shade during hot summer months, the “belvedere” at Monte Marzio is highly recommended for the stunning views that can be enjoyed from this location.
In the east of the province of Varese lies Valle Olona: here the forest of Rugareto is an oasis for birdwatchers and for eco-tourism in Italy. Here it is commonplace to come across imposing specimens of centuries old oaks and pine trees, natural habitats for the charming squirrel. Comfortable clothing and footwear suitable for longs walks is advisable.
For lovers of good food the Strada dei Sapori delle Valli Varesine is one of the 12 oeno-gastronomic routes of the flavours of Lombardy along which you will be able to sample specialities and wines typical of the province of Varese. Products such as the “Formaggella del Luinese” DOP cheese, Varese acacia honey and “Violino di Capra”, a special type of matured “prosciutto crudo”.
